I am excited to take you on a journey through my experiences in four different workshops on Computation in Design I have explored the vast potential of coding, creating abstarct art with an axis draw machine, projecting visuals, and investigating the intersection of technology and human interaction. As you browse through my showcased outcomes and documentation, you will see firsthand my skills in coding with Processing, my experinece with computation in design allows me to showcase the integration of software to create and meaningful design. I also showcased my artistic flair in using P5JS to project visuals onto surfaces, and my innovative approach to constructing an interactive installation that responded to human movement with Arduino. I invite you to join me in this adventure, where I will unveil my work and share my passion for Computation in Design. Get ready to experience a visual feast!

Workshops

Embark on a journey with me as I recount my experiences from the past semester, where I took part in four captivating workshops: Creative Coding, Projection Mapping, Making, and Physical Computing. Working in teams of up to three individuals or as an independent learner, we engaged in the documentation and production of our projects, with a focus on exploring innovative ways to leverage the power of code and create impactful interactions with the world around us. Join me as I reflect on my learnings and growth as a creative individual.

Workshop one

Coding is a workshop by Andreas Schlegel that looks at the creative application of code in the design process. Codingworkshop delves into the artistic applications of code in the design process, unleashing the boundless potential of this medium to generate static, interactive, and moving images that evoke a powerful emotional response. Through the exploration of algorithmically produced content, digital experiences, artificial intelligence, neural networks, and generative design, a new realm of possibilities emerges for creatives across diverse fields such as art, branding, architecture, and interaction design.

During the workshop, we banded together in teams of three and embarked on a journey to explore the wonders of nature. Inspired by the raw beauty of tree bark, my team sought to create an abstract art piece that would showcase the age of trees through a stunning visual representation of the unique rings that form over time. By uncovering the hidden beauty of the tree's layers, we sought to unlock the artistry inherent in nature that often goes unnoticed. Our project offered a rare glimpse into something we don't typically see in our daily lives, despite the profound role trees play in our environment. Through the use of an optical illusion, we symbolized the growth and natural beauty of the tree, inviting the viewer to immerse themselves in the majesty of nature's handiwork.

Workshop two

Dhiya's Making is an exquisite blend of software tools and hands-on crafting that guides us through a complete workflow - from initial sketches to the final masterpiece. This workshop aims to impart a comprehensive understanding of 3D space, specifically the seamless transition from 2D to 3D. Participants are also equipped with the ability to comprehend various data and file formats, as well as the practice of interaction between virtual and physical spaces. Our physical deliverables were based on the theme "Cosmic Dust," allowing us the creative freedom to research and create our own unique polygons.

In this workshop, I delved into the captivating world of cosmic dust and its formation of zodiacal lights, which became the inspiration for my project. The outcome, SYNASTRY, is a project that explores the mystical formation of Zodiacal Lights from Cosmic Dust. With outer space being beyond our reach, astrology often takes the form of a cherished fantasy. In this project, I created an abstract aeroplane that symbolizes the unique characteristics of Cosmic Dust and the proximity between humans and outer space. Aeroplanes are one of the closest human experiences to outer space, and through this project, I aim to share a somewhat familiar yet unobtainable experience with the audience.

Workshop three

Screens, a projection mapping workshop with Jo Ho. Through the world of projection mapping with Screens, this workshop will bring your wildest imagination to life. With the power of coding and projection, we'll learn how to mold images and videos into the shapes we create, resulting in a mesmerizing mini-project.

Our ultimate goal is to master the art of storytelling through projections, and what better way to achieve this than by venturing into a sci-fi, unknown 4D world of illusions. Our concept revolves around inter-dimensional portals that will transport viewers to alternate universes, providing them with a unique perspective on the astro-nautical world. Watch in awe as we showcase the lives of astronauts exploring the unknown universe, a privilege many of us cannot experience.

Tools used: P5JS, Premiere Pro, Projector

Workshop four

Play is a workshop by Jake Tan Zi Jie which looks at physical computing to interface between physical and digital spaces. Play workshop allows me to experience the merging of physical and digital worlds. Explore the exciting world of physical computing and its ability to connect computers and physical objects. This technology is widely used in the Internet of Things, robotics, and other physical interfaces. By participating in this workshop, I developed skills and awareness to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams on innovative projects.

For this workshop, my team and I will showcase our newfound knowledge by incorporating it into a unique concept: the stress ball. But this isn't just any ordinary stress ball. With the use of calming visuals, the harder you squeeze, the more relaxed you become. It's a refreshing take on mood detection that will help you unwind and let go of any tension. Join me in this interactive and exciting journey of physical computing!
